Description

Chapter 1

The year is 2040, and the world is not as we remember it. Shady families own and run mega corporations that buy and sell in carbon credits, backroom deals, and black market transactions. There is a one world banking system with a single currency, and the idea of a free-market is shunned and laughed at.

It is hotter than it was. Not from the global warming myth perpetuated by the pseudo scientists of the late 20th century, but because the sun has entered into a time of greater activity, which has raised the temperatures of the earth by 5 degrees. It has come down to a war for those resources that remain—water, oil, and what food can be grown in hydroponics fields.

By this time, computers are using dual 10-gigahertz processors and a .10 pico process. The transistors are assembled from practically nothing, on the verge between fantasy and reality, and are made from light itself. Each one is created at the subatomic level and assembled with the aid of a transmission electron force microscope. Many people have adopted bio-computers, which are more in keeping with the implants they possess. This works for them, especially since the end of the microchip is now at hand.

There rules over this dark world a group of shadowy figures who meet once a year to decide things—wars to start, wars to end, oil prices, who lives, who comes to power, and who must die. There is an elite group above them. Seven men, if you can call them men at all, oversee everything. Freedom is a bleak, faded memory and hope is a concept barely imagined that only rarely escapes from parched lips.

Into this world is born a man named Jeremiah Xidorn. He grows up in the city and learns the ways of the world. He receives his degree in AI Systems and Security from the university. The 23-year-old Jeremiah now lives in his first apartment on the Upper East Side. The sun is just breaking over the city. Its streams of light and color push back the darkness of night and move the sleepless city into a new day. Horns blare and the city bristles with bustling people going on with their lives, completely oblivious to the danger that surrounds them.
